The Alliance for Healthy Cities is an international network aiming at protecting and enhancing the health and liveability of cities and communities. The Alliance is a group of over 150 cities and other organizations (including supporting Universities) that try to achieve this goal through an approach called “Healthy Cities”. We believe that international cooperation is an effective and efficient tool to achieve the goal and we promote the interaction of people who are in the front lines of complex well-being, health and environmental issues. The Healthy Cities approach was initiated by the World Health Organization. In order to cope with the adverse effects of an urban environment on health, the WHO has been promoting he approach worldwide. As an increasing population lives in cities amid. global urbanization, will help make strides in the promotion of health of the people living in cities. As Secretary of the Australian Chapter of AFHC, of the AFHC, I look forward to meeting you again especially in Logan and Brisbane Cities, Australia, where we can continue our important work in building healthy cities and regional communities in partnership with local governments, local health partner agencies, the private sector and individuals

Secretary of the Australian Chapter of the Alliance for Healthy Cities

Brisbane 2012
The Alliance for Healthy Cities is an international network aiming at protecting and enhancing community health through the approach called ‘Healthy Cities’. Many National, State and Local government community plans and health, environment and transport strategies across the Asia and Pacific region (including Australian Cities) have been informed by this participatory approach. The Alliance for Healthy Cities has expanded to more than 200 cities through the Asia and Pacific Region since its inauguration in Kuching, Malaysia in 2004. Healthy City leaders from around the world received great encouragement and guidance at the previous Global Conferences in Suzhou, China in 2006, in Ichikawa, Japan in 2008, and in Gangnam, Korea in 2010.
The main theme of the conference is “Healthy Urbanisation - Healthy People”. With quality plenary, technical and workshop sessions, posters, technical visits and pre and post conference short courses (including visits to other Australian Healthy Cities), we will facilitate improved Leadership in local communities; promote Healthy Places, Healthy People, Healthy Cities, address emerging Disaster Management approaches and learn from Case Studies in Australian Healthy Cities.
The 5th Global Conference will attract politicians, policy makers, practitioners, academics, NGOs, community residents and those who work on the frontline of health, environmental and sustainable development. The conference will be a foundation towards implementing the key domains of WHO's Regional Framework for Scaling Up and Expanding Healthy Cities in the Western Pacific 2011-2015 and complement the federal, state and local government initiatives that seek to advance community well-being through cooperative and participatory initiatives.
You are invited to experience this world class international event in Australia's only subtropical capital city - Brisbane. As Australia's fastest growing region, South East Queensland is well situated to explore the issues of urbanisation and to further develop The World Health Organisation's Healthy Cities Program.
